An Interview with Zac Fay

Next

Our collaboration with Zac Fay, has to be one of the most exciting. Partly because he is based in Australia and secondly because he was one of our first artists to join our Artist Series.

We love his work, colour palette and use of eyes in random objects. The perfect fit for Rumble!

Introduce yourself...

My name is Zac and I’m an illustrator originally from NZ, and now based in Melbourne.

Have you always been an illustrator, and if not, how did you get into the career you have now?

I guess unofficially, yes! I’ve been drawing characters and their worlds my whole life, and have moonlighted as a barista and in retail, as many creatives do. I studied design at university and developed my digital illustration career over MANY years since then, getting my work out there as much as possible. It was a dream to be signed to Jacky Winter in Australia a little over a year ago.

You live & work in Melbourne, Australia. What’s it like, and how does the city inspire you?

Melbourne is without a doubt one of my favourite cities in the world. It’s such a vibrant, fun city to live and work in. So many people are doing amazing things in the arts here, whether visual, music or fashion, so it’s super inspiring to be a part of that world.

What’s your creative process? What tools do you use to create your images?

While my finished illustrations are digital, they all start from a piece of paper. I like to keep a hand-drawn element in my work, so I sketch everything up, scan it and work the magic from there.

What are you mostly inspired by when creating work?

So many things! COLOUR, friends, nature, cartoons, skating, shapes, and music.

Do you WFH, or have a studio space?

I have a pretty decent studio space set up at home, that I have definitely honed and organised during lockdowns!

What do you listen to when you make work?

I mean right now I’m listening to punk to get hyped for a big work day, but it changes all the time! Jazz, funk, hip hop, electronic - depends on my mood and what I’m drawing at the time.

What is your dream collab?

I’ve been super lucky to work with some awesome brands like Nike and Google recently, who were definitely on my dream collab list! Doing something with a toy company would be awesome to add to that.
